DNA replication. Each time a cell divides, each of its double strands of DNA splits into two single strands. Each of these single strands acts as a template for a new strand of complementary DNA. Transcription is the process of copying a segment of DNA into RNA. The segments of DNA transcribed into RNA molecules that can encode proteins are said to produce messenger RNA (mRNA). Other segments of DNA are copied into RNA molecules called non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs).

Precursor: The precursor of transcription is the non-coding or antisense DNA strand. The precursor of translation is the mRNA produced from transcription. Raw material: The raw material of transcription is the four base pairs of RNA; adenine, guanine, uracil, and cytosine. Transcription is the process by which the information in DNA is copied into messenger RNA (mRNA) for protein production.

• Transcription & translation occurs simultaneously • Eukaryotes • Occurs in nucleus • Generate monocistronic mRNA (one gene per transcript) • mRNA requires post-transcriptional modification • Transcripts transported to cytoplasm for translation

Translation occurs after transcription. Precursor: The precursor of transcription is the non-coding or antisense DNA strand. The precursor of translation is the mRNA produced from transcription. Raw material: The raw material of transcription is the four base pairs of RNA; adenine, guanine, uracil, and cytosine.
